Poolside Pinup

Wearing a flashback to the age of the 40s and 50s pinup feels both sexy and ladylike at the same time. This retro Rockabilly trend just keeps picking up steam and getting more popular all of the time, it only makes sense that there are swimwear styles to match. Cute bows, little skirts, ruffles. It’s the playful details that make the retro look. Traditionally, these vintage inspired styles would only be available from vintage reproduction clothiers like Pinup girl (whom I love!) but I have started to find that more mainstream and surf companies have been following suit as well.

I love this one-piece bathing suit by Pinup Couture from The Foxy Shoppe in Winnipeg. The solid construction really holds you in and it just feels so glamorous! All of the one piece and high waisted options on Pinupgirl.com are great for when you don’t feel comfortable showing off your belly.

Juicy Couture had some classy but fun options including this off white bikini with front panel ruching and gold button details. With this bathing cap from Vintage Glory, in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, I feel like an extra in one of those epic, Esther Williams, 1940s films with dozens of synchronized swimmers! How Style Hunter Fox is that?!

Before I go on, can we all just appreciate the awesome Winnipeg skyline from this rooftop photo shoot, expertly captured by Dano Tanaka!! I know, right?!! Anyway, back to swimsuits…

I certainly appreciate when bikini tops and bottoms are sold separately. Don’t be afraid to mix and match! The flirty, skirted, navy bottoms are by Juicy Couture and the two tops are both Abercrombie & Fitch, AND all three are different sizes. True fashionistas are not  concerned about what the tag says. Obey the mirror and buy what fits. If you’re getting a muffin top, time to size up! You will automatically look like you dropped a size.

This Ralph Lauren suit is more mainstream than the rest, but with the right hairstyle and accessories, the sailor motif definitely pulls through the vintage vibe. All of these fun sunglasses, scarves and hair flowers are available at The Foxy Shoppe.

Summer may feel half over but there are plenty of beach days left to soak up the sun and now swimwear will be going on sale! All of these two piece suits were found at Winners where they still had plenty of selection. Take your time and try on plenty of styles and sizes. Put on your cat-eye sunnies and throw a flower in your hair! Who says going for a swim can’t be glam?

Be a playful pinup next time you’re at the pool!
