Christmas, Outside The Box
I’ve had some extra special thrifting luck for Christmas presents for my kids this year. I didn’t even have gift giving in mind when these treasures presented themselves to me but that’s the benefit to having an open mind to opportunities before you walk in.
One day, in the fall, thrifting with my kids (a favourite family activity for us!) my youngest spotted a shelf full of Asian display dolls that she became completely enamoured with. I allowed her to buy two for her room and went back the next day to buy a few more for her for Christmas. Soon after, at a different Salvation Army Thrift Store, I came across these totally unique jewelry boxes that open up to a mirror on top. I know she is going to love these! With these Asian themed gifts I was thinking that a bedroom makeover was in order. I chose some Chinese fabric to make a cover for the down duvet we also recently thrifted for her. I️ better get sewing!
My oldest daughter has decided that Steampunk is everything! She gets annoyed when people don’t know what it is and figures that steampunk fashion should just be a part of every day life. (Gee, I️ wonder whose kid she is.) If you’re among the many left in the dark, here is a definition according to Urban Dictionary.
Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.”
Here is all three of us looking fairly Steampunk this past Halloween.
One of the Salvation Army locations, here in Winnipeg, had the most incredible Steampunk display in their windows in October and I️ knew I️ had to get my hands on some of that! I️ was informed that the items would be available November 6th and you better believe that I️ marked that in my calendar. Much of it had already been snatched up by the time I️ got there but I️ did come home with this super cool box, several pocket watches and a few more accessories. The potion phial pendant, in particular, she will go crazy over! The short faux leather blazer and ruffled blouse were found on separate trips and embody the Victorian adventurer that is Steampunk. I can’t wait to see what she does with it all. Shopping with a theme or a person’s collection in mind makes buying meaningful gifts so much easier. Even more so at thrift stores where you are, inevitably, going to find a little bit of everything.
I’ll be sure to share some reactions from Christmas morning!
